The Sanctuary of Cetaceans: where, when and why

The Sanctuary called "Pelagos", which was established thanks to an international agreement between Italy, France and Principality of Monaco signed in Rome in 1999, is the first protected area in the world dedicated to the safeguard of cetaceans

This part of the sea rich in marine life extends over about 96,000 square kilometers and is included between the French Riviera, Liguria, Tuscany and the northern coast of Sardinia, and it includes Corsica, the Tuscan Archipelago and the Asinara Island.

In this area France, Italy and Principality of Monaco signed the agreement (ratified in 2002) that includes both the territorial waters of the signatory Nations and the overlooking international waters, with the aim to safeguard the cetaceans that find in this area a particularly suitable habitat.So the Pelagos international Sanctuary for the marine Mammals of the Mediterranean Sea was established, and the three Countries undertake to safeguard these species and their habitats, protecting them from the direct and indirect negative impacts caused by human activities.
