Ancient muletrack linking the village of Monterosso to the Soviore Sanctuary, it separates from trail 592 (VerdeAzzurro Riomaggiore-Monterosso) nearby Torre Aurora. The first stretch runs along Via Roma until it meets an old stairway that climbs up the ridge among cultivated terraces and lemon and olive groves.
The ancient path was replaced in some stretches by country lanes, sometimes concrete-paved, and regains its original feature nearby the intersection with the provincial road to Monterosso. A small tabernacle with a wrought iron cross can be spotted just before the trail meets the paved road, reminding that this path was traditionally used on Good Friday for the procession of the Stations of the Cross. Only a few other tabernacles of the Stations have survived.

After crossing the paved road the trail winds up a wood of chestnut trees and black locusts (Robinia pseudoacacia), where some unusually large steppingstones can be found. Along the stretch across the wood hikers can also find a small water fountain on the right. Further on, the trail passes by the so-called Chapel of Recovery (Cappella del Ritrovamento) built to point out the site where the sacred sculpture of the Pietà, kept in Soviore Sanctuary, was originally found in A.D. 740, according to legend.
The trail then reaches the forecourt of the Santuary (470 meters a.s.l.). The whole complex, renovated in 2000, is rather wide, consisting of a church and some seasonal facilities for tourists and pilgrims.  Trail 509 ends where the stairway of the Sanctuary meets the SP 51, on a stretch of the road that is also part of trail 591. From this point hikers can continue along the provincial paved road SP Bardellone-Cassana that will lead them, in about 1 km, to the intersection with AV5T.
