The Park also has a blue lung, vital and closely connected to its terrestrial part. This is the marine protected area, established in 1997 by ministerial decree to safeguard and enhance the biodiversity preserved in the seabeds of the Cinque Terre.
It covers approximately 4,000 hectares with an 18 km stretch of coastline, bordered to the west by the Punta Mesco promontory in Monterosso and extending eastward beyond Capo Montenero in Riomaggiore.
