Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area

A heritage to discover

The Park also has a blue lung, vital and closely connected to its terrestrial part. This is the marine protected area, established in 1997 by ministerial decree to safeguard and enhance the biodiversity preserved in the seabeds of the Cinque Terre.
It covers approximately 4,000 hectares with an 18 km stretch of coastline, bordered to the west by the Punta Mesco promontory in Monterosso and extending eastward beyond Capo Montenero in Riomaggiore.

Its crystal-clear waters are home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, protected through three levels of conservation:

  • Zone A: integral reserve, with restricted access to ensure maximum habitat protection.
  • Zone B: general reserve, where activities are regulated to maintain a balance between conservation and use.
  • Zone C: partial reserve, allowing broader use while respecting the environment.

For more information on the rules and access conditions of the Marine Protected Area, visit the official website: Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area.
