Post-alert: SVA path closure for restoration work from Corniglia to Monterosso

(sede del Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre, 22 October 2023)

On the sidelines of the inspection carried out yesterday by the geologists appointed by the Park Authority for the post-weather alert checks on the stretch of the SVA Corniglia Vernazza Monterosso path, the experts found some critical points that call for the introduction of specific interventions aimed at reducing risks and restoring practicability.

The heavy rain, recently stopped, has led to a condition of total saturation of detrital layers, as well as to the presence of materials in a precarious state of stability, and at risk of falling onto the path, which must be promptly removed.

Furthermore, the collapse of a dry-stone wall was reported, about 200 metres from the access to the path from Vernazza, on the upstream side, affecting a stretch about 4-5 metres long. The debris and some stone blocks invaded the pathway. The Park Authority technicians have already scheduled the removal of the debris to clear the stretch, the supply of stone materials and the reconstruction of the dry-stone wall.

In the meantime, yesterday morning, during their inspection, the Park’s maintenance staff and the operators of the ATI 5 Terre Consortium had already removed a tree that had collapsed on the path and repaired the parapet underneath, which had been damaged by the plant’s falling.

The stretch of the REL SVA Corniglia - Vernazza - Monterosso path will remain closed until the scheduled interventions are completed, to allow the work to be carried out in complete safety. The sale of the Cinque Terre Card Trekking is also suspended.

Updates on the practicability of the Park’s hiking network can be found in its dedicated section at the link and on the web app at the link
